The Monroe Police Department Crash Investigation Unit responds to all fatal accidents, any accident where the injuries indicate that a fatality is likely to occur, and any other accident where the facts and circumstances indicate that their expertise is needed and warranted.  Officers assigned to the unit are highly trained in traffic crash investigation and reconstruction. The unit is responsible for gathering evidence, taking photographs and taking detailed measurements to create accurate scaled diagrams of the crash scene.  Detailed measurements are made using a Nikon Total Station forensic mapping device. Data from the total station is then downloaded to a computer-aided design (CAD) program to provide accurate scale drawings of the crash scene. The unit trains on a monthly basis to maintain their skill. The unit is also available to assist the Detectives with crime scene documentation.
