trash rate update

On March 23, 2021, City Council passed legislation approving a contract extension with Rumpke through January 2023. In the extension agreements, Rumpke increased the rates charged to the City for each consecutive year. City Council's Finance Committee evaluated those increases against our current Trash Fund cash balance and found that if we did not increase the rate charged to Monroe residents, The City's Trash Fund would have a negative fund balance by the end of the year.

Trash rates have not increase for Monroe City residents since February 2006. City Council's FInance Committee evaluated several options for increasing the rates, but ultimately, they recommended to Council that we increase rates to a level this year that would eliminate the need for another increase next year. Therefore, Council has approved legislation that will increase the residents' trash rates from $13.50 to $18.48 per month. At the end of this contract extension period, the City will bid out the trash service contract to ensure we continue to get competitive pricing.

Council's Finance Committee also reviewed a 2020 survey of trash rates charged by surrounding communities. These communities included: Lebanon, Corwin, Centerville, Franklin, Morrow, Middletown, Waynesville, Mason, and Springboro. Of these twelve communities, Monroe's original trash rate was $2.00 lower per month than the lowest rate charged in the communities. After this increase, Monroe will still be lower than four of the 2020 surveyed communities.

This rate change is effective 04/23/2021.

Rumpke Garbage Collection

Rumpke is the current trash provider, but the City of Monroe is the billing agent for the trash and recycling pick-up.

Trash pick up is determined by the street you live on. View a complete schedule (PDF). As a reminder, no person shall place containers of the following on the tree lawn or curb for collection before 5 p.m. on the day prior to collection:

  • Garbage
  • Refuse
  • Rubbish
  • Trash
  • Waste
  • Any other material

All containers shall be removed from the tree lawn or curb area by 6 a.m. on the morning following collection. Refuse containers shall not be stored in any portion of the front yard.

In an effort to help prevent the spread of bedbugs, the Board of Health now requires mattresses and box springs to be completely sealed in plastic before any trash vendor can pick them up. This plastic can be the sheeting painters use or garbage bags that have been secured with duct tape.

Trash Containers

Rumpke rents the large trash wheeled toter to residents for $3.00 a month. (This is not mandatory, as you can use your own trash containers or bags). They will bill you separately for the trash toter and they bill quarterly. You can contact them directly at 513-742-2900. You will also need to contact Rumpke if you have any questions about specific items that you need picked up.

Missed Trash

If your trash was missed, please contact the City of Monroe at 513-539-7374, ext. 1000. We will log the missed trash and contact Rumpke. If they are still in the area, they will pick up the missed trash the same day. If they have left the area, usually they will pick up the missed trash within the next 24 hours. The exception to this is on weekends and/or holidays.

Holiday Trash Pick-up

There are only 2 days that Rumpke will not pick up trash: Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. If your normal scheduled trash pick-up is on or following either of these holidays, trash pick-up will be picked up the next day.

Large Item Pick up

Twice a year, as determined by City Council, Rumpke will pick up large items (items that normally would not be picked up on regular trash pick-ups). They are always on a Saturday, and they are usually in the Spring and Fall.
